Filming the Uneven Space and its Inhabitants

Space is an essential element of documentary filmmaking even when it’s not itself the main subject of the documentary narration. The documentary subject does not exist abstractly, but is always contextualized and anchored in a place.

How can a documentary film speak of an inhospitable or even brutal space? How can it film individuals that are undergoing the sudden upheaval of their environment? How can documentary narrate displacement? What aesthetic and narrative choices are incumbent on the documentary filmmaker? How can people talk about their neighborhood, their country, their refuge?

In the framework of 15e Ecrans du réel, the panel discussion "Filming the uneven space and its inhabitants" will bring together 4 directors to explore the consequences of filmed space on their documentary subject and their desire to highlight the marginal.

With: Hendrick Dusollier (Last Days in Shibati), Karim Aïnouz (Central Airport THF), Garry Keane (Gaza), and Rania Stephan (editor, Panoptic).
Moderated by Nour Ouayda (Metropolis Art Cinema).
