Producing Inequality in the Organization of Lebanese Territory

How does urban planning work in Lebanon? What is the motivation behind the issuance of directive designs? In what way do these designs violate fundamental rights?

Over the past year, we have tried to answer these questions through our project in Public Works Studio in partnership with Legal Agenda entitled "Urbanism and Law in Lebanon: Guiding Designs and Their Impact on Life". During it, we examined the existing legal framework and critically looked at land use maps (i.e. directive designs) in 15 cities and towns in Lebanon, from the far north to the far south: Zgharta, Mina, Chekka, Hissoun, Kousba, Barbara, Zouk Mikael, Dbayeh, Damour, Dibbiyeh, Baakline, Adloun, Abbasiya, Nabatieh, Qana

Join us to launch the publication and attend the webinar where we explore how factors such as the existing legal framework, ownership, identity and interests have contributed to displacing people's imagination, the fabric of places, livelihoods, and sometimes entire neighborhoods
