Fahavalo by Marie-Clémence Andriamonta Paes

They were called FAHAVALO – enemies - because they rebelled in 1947 against French colonisation in Madagascar. The last witnesses tell about their long months of resistance in the jungle, armed only with spears, machetes and talismans.

Marie-Clémence Andriamonta Paes is both Malagasy and French. In 1988, with Cesar Paes, brazilian filmmaker, she created Laterit Productions, an independent production company based in Paris.
She wrote and produced documentaries such as “Angano… Angano… Tales from Madagascar”, “Songs and Tears of Nature”, and “Awara Soup”, “Saudade do Futuro”, “Mahaleo”, “An Opera from the Indian Ocean” and “Songs for Madagascar”. "Fahavalo, Madagascar 1947" is her first film as director.
