SCREENING | 'The Dupes' by Tawfik Saleh

  • Dar El Nimer for Arts and Culture (map)

Set in the 1950s Iraq, the film traces the destinies of three Palestinian refugees who try to make their way across the borders into Kuwait, concealed in the steel tank of a truck. Each one believes he can make a new life for himself. The Dupes, which is based on Ghassan Kanafani's 1962 novella Men in the Sun, is one of the first Arab films to address the Palestinian cause.

Tewfik Saleh was born in 1926 in Alexandria. He went to France in 1950 on a scholarship to cinematic arts, where he also worked as an assistant director in three French films. In 1955, Saleh wrote in collaboration with Naguib Mahfouz his film debut Fools' Alley. His film The Dupes received critical acclaim and collected many awards in Tunisia, France, Belgium and Russia.

Director Mai Masri will present the film and a Q&A with Anni Kanafani will follow the screening.
