CONCERT | Amal Kawash and Wessam Elali

Amal Ziad Kawash ia a Palestinian songwriter and vocalist born in Lebanon. As a vocalist, Amal started as a member of Jafra band for Palestinian Songs (Beirut) in 2001 before taking on an independent path. She studied classical Arabic singing at the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music, and has collaborated both as a vocalist as well as a songwriter with local and international musicians of which are Ahmad Qaabour (Lebanon) and Opgang 2 (Denmark).
In addition to music, Amal’s interests extend to visual art. She’s an illustrator mostly known for her cartoon character; Meiroun, who carries the name of her family village in Palestine which was ethnically cleansed in 1948. With Meiroun, Amal won first rank at Hanzala cartoon contest commemorating the Palestinian Nakbah (The Cultural Resource, 2008). Her illustrations feature in Assafir newspaper (Lebanon) and other media and social platforms.


Wessam Elali is the founder and conductor of the first ūd orchestra in Syria (sada - echo). He participated in numerous oriental music festivals and performed as a solo ūd player with various orchestras and ensembles. Wessam taught ūd and oriental singing in the school of music at the University of Baath - Syria.


President of the oriental music department at the Arab Institute (Mohammad Abdel Karim) Ministry of Culture. Graduated from the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus, and holder of a Masters degree in Music Education from the University of Damascus.
