The Narrative of the Palestinian Wound, an Analysis of Israeli Bio Politics | Panel Discussion
Dar El-Nimer will host a panel moderated by Moein El-Taher in the presence of Michel Nawfal, Elias Khoury, Wali Noueiheid and Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah (via video call).
On this panel, Dr. Abu Sittah will share his latest experience as a volunteer surgeon at Al-Shifa hospital during the 11-day assault on Gaza. Michel Nawfal will present his publication the Narrative of the Palestine Wound. The book is a result of conversations between Dr. Abu Sittah and researcher Nawfal. It explores Abu Sittah’s theoretical and clinical frameworks from his personal experiences. The conversation will also tackle the issue of conflict medicine, bio politics and bio power. Elias Khoury will link the book to the current situation in Palestine and Walid Noueiheid will give it a critical overview.
Speakers:
Michel Nawfal is a journalist and researcher who specialised in the Arab-Israeli conflict. He has worked at An-Nahar’, Al Mustaqbal and Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspapers. Nawfal is a former researcher at the Institute for Palestine Studies and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Palestine Studies.
Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah is a British-Palestinian plastic and reconstructive surgeon, known as one of the world’s leading specialists in craniofacial surgery.
He completed his medical education at the University of Glasgow.
In 2011, he joined the American University of Beirut Medical Centre as an Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr. Abu Sittah is known for his humanitarian work as a war surgeon, notably in conflict zones such as Iraq, South Lebanon and Gaza.
Walid Noueihed holds a BA in History from the Arab University (1972) and a BA in Philosophy from the Lebanese University (1974).
He has worked in journalism since 1970 and is the coordinator of the Folding Memory, a series of publications issued by the Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies in Qatar.
Noueihed is the author of numerous publications on Arab-Islamic philosophy, history and politics.
Elias Khoury is a novelist and researcher. He was the assistant editor for the Palestinian Affairs Magazine, editorial director of Al-Karmel Magazine, the director of the cultural section of Al-Safir, and editor in chief of Al-Mulhaq the literary supplement of An-Nahar. Khoury has been on the editorial board for Palestinian Studies magazine since 2001.
He has taught at Columbia University, the University of New York and the Lebanese American University.
His notable works include novel Gate of the Sun (1988) and screenplay Out of Life (1991) with Maroun Baghdadi.
Moein Al-Taher is a Palestinian writer, researcher and former member of the Revolutionary Council of Fatah and the Supreme Military Council of the Palestinian Revolution, Moein Al-Taher contributed to the establishment of the Student Brigade in the mid-seventies and was a commander in the Lebanese-Palestinian Forces. Al-Taher is a writer for the Institute for Palestine Studies.
