Space is an essential element of documentary filmmaking even when it’s not itself the main subject of the documentary narration. The documentary subject does not exist abstractly but is always contextualized and anchored in a place.

How can a documentary film speak of an inhospitable or even brutal space? How can it film individuals that are undergoing the sudden upheaval of their environment? How can documentary narrate displacement? What aesthetic and narrative choices are incumbent on the documentary filmmaker? How can people talk about their neighbourhood, their country, their refuge?

The panel discussion will bring together four directors to explore the consequences of filmed space on their documentary subject and their desire to highlight the marginal. With Hendrick Dussolier (Last Days in Shibati), Karim Ainouz (Central Airport THF), Garry Keane (Gaza), and Rania Stephan (Editor, Panoptic), moderated by Nour Ouayda (Metropolis Art Cinema).
