AL-GHILAF | 'Electro Music' by Rami Abadir & Ziad Nawfal

  • Dar El Nimer for Arts and Culture (map)

In the third encounter of Al-Ghilaf, Rami Abadir and Ziad Michel Nawfal will discuss the history and challenges of electronic and experimental music in Egypt and Lebanon, in terms of record labels, performative spaces and evolution in recent years.

Rami Abadir is a critic, editor of the electronic music desk in Ma3azef and music producer. In his independent project, ABADIR, and his collaboration ON4B with Mostafa Onsy, Abadir's works fall under experimental and ambient music. In the past few years, he has fundamentally contributed to the experimental and electronic music scene in Cairo, especially in co-organising the audiovisual performances Mapping Possibilities with Nurah Farahat and Islam Shabana.

Ziad Michel Nawfal is a DJ, radio host, music promoter and producer based in Beirut. He has spent the better part of the last 27 years exposing Lebanon and the world to the special local and regional independent music talent, on his long-running radio shows Ruptures and Décalages, on Radio-Lebanon 96.2FM. In 2008, Nawfal co-founded independent music label Ruptured with Lebanese studio owner and engineer Fadi Tabbal. Ruptured focuses on the production of emerging alternative talent from Lebanon and the Middle Eastern region. To this day, the label has released 25 original albums and compilations documenting the Lebanese alternative scene in its various stages of development; Ruptured has also organised over 100 concerts and performances in Lebanon, featuring both Lebanese and international artists. Since 2013, Nawfal has officiated as the managing director of Irtijal, the first and foremost festival for experimental music in Lebanon.
